Whether it be the current fetish shown by R&B producers with 'robot-voice' generating software or the penchant for sampling horrible 90's pop, but their definitely seems to be a lack of original old fashioned soul in the urban market. Whilst electro pop is great at getting heads bopping and booty's shaking, it often comes at the expense of more organic and often more meaningful music. Thankfully, Chicago newcomer Jeremih is wary of this as he bins the bleeps and whistles in favour of a more soulful style on his latest single, 'Birthday Sex'. Reminiscent of K-Ci & JoJo or Donell Jones , 'Birthday Sex' is an old fashioned slow-jam complete with references to waterbeds, flowers, champagne and other icons of sexy romance. Of course, it's all ground that's been thoroughly covered plenty of times before but the track contains enough original hooks to make it stand out from the pack. This is no small part due to the work of rookie producer Mick Schultz who Jeremih met at Columbia College and has now struck up a healthy partnership with. Already receiving massive support in the US and in the UK from Tim Westwood, who has been showing his love for the song via his regular Twitter updates; expect 'Birthday Sex' to be a serious force in the urban world for some time.~Stephen Titmus.
