iDing
How do I iD a track?
You can do it using Shazam's legendary music recognition service on your mobile phone (called a Mobile Audio iD. UK only service), and now you can iD tracks directly on the Shazam website (called a Shazam. Available worldwide). Whichever method you choose, as soon as you iD a track, it shows in your own personal iD list on www.shazam.com (you need to have completed registration to enable this)!
iDing music using your mobile phone is as easy as 1,2,3:
- Hear Cool New Music when you're out and about.
(Shazam music recognition technology doesn't work on live music, classical music, or if you sing or hum the tune!) - Dial 2580 (straight down the middle of your keypad. UK only shortcode and service) and point your mobile at the source. Shazam attempts to match the sample of the tune against its ever-growing database of nearly 4 million tracks. Let it do its thing… Shazam hangs-up automatically after 20 seconds.
- Bing! Here's a text with the name of the track and artist. If any associated products are available directly through your mobile, simply follow the link in the text message to the Shazam WAP portal to buy the Download or Ringtone.
Then Sign in or Register at Shazam.com, to check, manage and buy stuff connected to the tracks and artists you've iD'd, including full-track downloads of the songs themselves, remixes, CDs, DVDs and even gig tickets.
Once you are registered and signed in, you can also use Shazam.com to search for other tracks, artists and albums; check the latest iD Charts from around the world; create your own profile page; check out what other members of the Shazam Community have been iDing; send messages to other members you're interested in; use Music Explorer, Shazam's unique music recommendation application, to discover new tracks, artists and albums based on the real iDing activity of over 20 million Shazam users, some of whom have similar tastes to you!
Don't forget, you can now iD tracks online by clicking the Shazam button on any track page. Any song you Shazam shows on your iD list in My iD List.
Where can I use Shazam?
At home, in the car (but NOT when you're the one driving, please), in a club, in a shop… wherever. Shazam music recognition works on music playing from the radio, CD, internet or even TV. If it's loud enough and you've got reception you can iD. Remember, Shazam won't work on live or classical music or if you try to hum or sing the song.
Outside the UK, we've many partners running similar music recognition services powered by Shazam technology. See our Partner page.
Can I use the service outside the UK?
Outside the UK, we've many partners running similar music recognition services, all powered by Shazam. For the full list international partners click here
How do I view my list of iD'd tracks?
Simply Register or Sign in at www.shazam.com and go to the My Shazam page to check your iD Llist or other members Taglists under the My tag list section. Your iD List shows all tracks that you've iD'd. Only Shazams and audio iDs made by UK iDers using 2580 will appear in your iD List. International customers should refer to their service provider for information about their iD Lists.
Which mobile networks does Shazam work on?
Shazam works in the UK across all the mobile networks (02, Orange, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Virgin and 3). The service is currently unavailable on Tesco Mobile.
What type of music does it work with?
Shazam has 3.5 million+ songs in its evolving database, which includes most forms of popular music going right back to the 1950's. This includes pre-release singles (enabling you to iD and identify new tracks and artists before they are commercially available) and also a vast array of world music relating to the different countries where international partners use Shazam technology to power their own music recognition service.
Does Shazam work with live music?
No, Shazam only works with pre-recorded music. But it does work with recorded live sessions.
Can it identify humming?
No, Shazam only works with pre-recorded music. It can't identify humming, finger tapping or your toilet flushing!
Why wasn't my track recognised in a noisy environment?
Shazam needs music to be the dominant sound to work. Remember to point your mobile at the music source. We end the call with a tone after 20 seconds regardless, and send you a text. If we couldn't iD your track, mail us at Customer Services telling us where you were, or what type of track you tried to iD.
Why doesn't it work even if I can hear the music clearly?
Shazam's got nearly every track on every CD sold in the UK. Sometimes we'll miss the very latest release or really obscure tracks. We're adding more music constantly so don't give up! iDing needs music to be the dominant sound to work, so remember to point your mobile at the music source. If we couldn't iD your track, mail us at Customer Services telling us where you were, or what type of track you tried to iD.
Do I need to enable caller ID?
To use Shazam your phone must have caller ID enabled. Shazam needs to know the number you're dialling from to text you the answer and update your iD list. There's usually an option on your mobile to turn caller ID on or off in settings. If you're not sure how to do this, check the manual
for your handset or call you Network operator for advice or assistance.
I iD'd a track and the text containing the recognition result is delayed. Why?
Shazam automatically processes iDing requests and sends them to your operator. In rare cases, at peak times, there have been delays. Please be patient, and contact your mobile operator directly if there are problems.
I dialled 2580 and nothing happened. Why?
Was there good reception? Check your mobile to see if you have sufficient signal for network access. If you can't make an ordinary call, you can't use Shazam.
If you're using a corporate account you may need to key 9 before dialling 2580. Some mobile operators bar premium number dialling and/or receiving premium rate incoming SMS. Please contact your provider who may unbar your phone.
If you've previously texted STOP to a premium message service, you may be barred from using Shazam. Please contact us at Customer Services and we'll do our best to help.
Can anyone else see my list of iD'd songs?
Yes, our Community offers you the chance to meet people who like the same music you do. Our Facebook application allows you to display your iDs to all of your Facebook friends too.
How does Shazam charge?
Shazam charges you using by premium SMS through your mobile operator. If you successfully iD a track using 2580 the charge is taken from your credit if you are on pre-pay (Pay as You Go) or from your monthly bill if you are on contract.
How much does it cost to iD a track?
A successful iD costs a flat rate of 50p each time, regardless of your Network price plan, plus your Network operators standard call charge for the duration of the 20 second call to 2580.
Am I charged if my track's not iD'd?
If your track can't be iD'd you're only charged a standard call rate by your Network provider for the 20 seconds you're connected to Shazam – this varies depending on your network and the tariff you're on. Check with your network provider for specific costs. There's no charge for receiving the text message telling you that Shazam could not identify a song. Your feedback is always welcome, so please mail us with your views on our pricing.
Is it free to see my iD list on the web or WAP site?
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Does it work on pre-pay (Pay as You Go phones)?
Yes. iDing costs the same on pre-pay (Pay as You Go phones) and contract tariffs. If you're in credit, iD away!
