Shazam listens to the track and compares it to its database of over 4 million tracks to find a matching "audio fingerprint". Once it's got enough of a sample to find a match it even hangs up the call for you.
If it finds a match it sends you the info - the track name and artist (called an iD) - back as a text message AND the result appears in your iD List on your Facebook page as well.
The service works in the UK at the moment.

At present the full Shazam mobile to Facebook service is available to UK users only. Non-UK residents can download the app to share music discoveries and find out what their friends have been Shazaming on their mobiles in the UK!
There is a charge for using the mobile Shazam 2580 service - each time you use the service it costs 50p per successful recognition (plus a network operator call charge, which is usually no more than a maximum of 12p). But if the tune can't be recognised there's NO CHARGE for the text message. The service works on all music except classical and live performances.
